Grillz Guide

Everything you need to know before your first set, from taking an impression to choosing your design and metal.

How a grill fits

The metal is moulded to the shape of your teeth at the front and back, so the grill slides on like a cap. When we make the grill we balance the thickness and shape of the metal in certain places so it acts like a spring, holding the tooth firmly without pressure. We balance both the metal and tooth structure and it's the reason a grill should come from someone who takes the fit seriously. It should feel secure enough that you can talk and move without thinking about it and with no pressure or ache on any single tooth.

Getting your Impression

An accurate dental impression is essential to the fit of your grillz.

AT THE STUDIO

The most accurate option and the one we recommend where possible. It takes about fifteen minutes and we know immediately whether we've got what we need. Sydney studio, by appointment.

AT HOME

Every grillz order ships with a free impression kit and instructions. Plenty of people get a perfect impression first go. It requires care and a bit of patience and if the impression doesn't give us what we need, we'll tell you and send another kit rather than work from something compromised.

FROM YOUR DENTIST

We also accept impressions taken by a dental professional. If you have receding gums, extensive dental work or you've tried an at-home kit before without success, this is worth the visit.

If you choose to take your impression at home using our mould kit, you are responsible for providing an accurate impression by following our guide. If we identify an issue with your mould before production begins, we will contact you.

If a completed piece does not fit due to an inaccurate impression provided by the customer, remakes or adjustments will be quoted case by case and charged at cost. Fit issues caused by our craftsmanship are covered under our workmanship guarantee.

Choose Your Set and design

We understand there are an overwhelming amount of options. We have six styles listed as options on the site however we could easily list fifty more. If you go into custom grillz you will see just how many designs and options are available and not even there have we got all the styles we have made. To try and break it down for you, these are the main considerations to help you decide what style to go for.

Our set styles are the fastest way to see what's possible: Classic Grillz · Window Grillz · Diamond Window Grillz · Diamond Tip Grillz · Natural Diamond Grillz · Custom Designed Grillz

If what you want isn't among them, reach out to us. There's very little we won't take on.

NUMBER OF TEETH

Grillz are counted by teeth covered. Most people start with the top six, which is what shows when you smile and talk. Eight and ten extend further back for a fuller look. Singles and pairs are common as a first piece or as a permanent everyday option. If it's your first set, top six is the most common choice and a single or a pair is the easiest way in. The less metal you're wearing, the less there is to get used to.

TOP OR BOTTOM

Uppers are the visible default. Bottoms sit lower in the mouth and read differently, more subtle in conversation but very present when you want them to be. Plenty of people wear both.

SOLID OR OPEN FACE

Solid covers the full face of the tooth in metal. Open face cuts a window out of the centre so the tooth shows through which reads lighter and lets the shape of the metal do the work.

Beyond the metal, the design is open. Diamond tips, window settings, full pavé, engraving, enamel, gemstone inlay, fangs, bridge gap pieces, initials, monograms and motifs drawn from scratch.

metals and materials

We work in 9k and 18k gold across yellow, white and rose and sterling silver. Each behaves differently in wear and the mouth is a harsher environment than a hand.

A note on karats, most grillz content online is American, where the standard is 10k and 14k. Australia works in 9k and 18k. There's nothing missing in the difference, 9k sits just below 10k in gold content and wears slightly harder, while 18k is richer in colour and more tarnish-resistant.

Full detail on every metal and stone we use is on our Materials page.

removable or permanent

All Illoom grillz are removable however we can do permanent.

Removable is what most people wear. The grill slides on and off, which means you take it out to eat and sleep and you can keep the tooth underneath clean.

Permanent crowns are fixed by a dentist and stay in. They suit people who want gold as part of their everyday appearance rather than something they put on. This is a considered decision, it involves work on the tooth itself and it isn't easily reversed. We make both and we're happy to talk through which makes sense for what you're after.

CARE

Clean them as often as you clean your teeth. A soft brush on the inside, a polishing cloth on the outside and never with abrasive toothpaste. Store them dry in the container they came with.

If a stone loosens or the fit changes, stop wearing the piece and bring it in. Cleaning is complimentary for the life of the piece, bring them in any time.

COST AND TIMING

Current prices for every style are on the individual product pages. Four elements move the price:

  • Number of teeth. The largest single factor.
  • Metal. Silver, 9k, 18k in ascending order. Gold price also moves with the market.
  • Stone work. Whether there are stones, how many, what they are and how they're set.
  • Detailing. Engraving, enamel, inlay, cut-outs and custom design work each add bench hours.

Customs begin with a $500 deposit and is non-refundable once design work starts.

Lead time is one to four weeks from the day we receive your impression, depending on complexity. Finished pieces can be collected from the studio, where we'll fit them and make any adjustments on the spot, or shipped with tracking.

common questions

Can I get them to cover a missing tooth?

Yes, we have done many different styles like this, it becomes a custom grill with the piece bridging the space rather than sitting on it.

Can I get them if I have a permanent wire or retainer?

Yes, we have made grillz to fit around a permanent wire. Ideally we'd take your impression at the studio to ensure the mould captures it accurately.

What if I have crowns, veneers, implants or braces?

Crowns, veneers and implants are all workable. Braces are the exception, we'd wait until they're off because your teeth are still moving and a grill made today won't fit in three months.

If you're unsure whether your situation is workable, send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

What if I have a gap between my teeth?

Gaps are straightforward and often a design feature rather than a problem. The piece can be made to close the gap, follow it or frame it.

Can I eat with my grillz in?

Technically you could. You shouldn't. Food catches between the metal and the tooth and harder foods will mark the surface and it will affect your natural bite. For longevity and your own dental health, remove them whilst eating and sleeping. Every set comes with a container to carry so you can take them out at a table and put them back after.

Are grillz comfortable to wear?

Like a lot of jewellery the more you wear them the more natural they become. The less teeth you have the easier the adjustment. They should never be painful or uncomfortable on the tooth, rather an adjustment period of talking with them and there being something in your mouth you aren't used to. We like to use the analogy of wearing shoes, you go about your day and don't feel uncomfortable with them on however at the end of the day there's still a bit of relief when they come off.
